University Ranking in South Africa Since there are currently no South African rankings, the rankings of universities in South Africa are largely based on international university rankings.
According to these international university rankings, South Africa has the best university system in the entire continent. It is home to five of the top six universities in Africa, including the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand, which are located in the country's two most important cities (Cape Town and Johannesburg, respectively), and are consistently ranked as the continent's two best academic institutions.
