Documents Required For SASSA Disability Grant 2022/2023

SASSA Disability Grants are available for eligible individuals who have a disability and are unable to work, or if you’re temporarily unable to work for longer than 6 months due to a physical or mental disability.

The SASSA disability grant can be paid as a lump sum or monthly installments.

If you have a disability, you can apply for a disability grant at your nearest SASSA office. A family member or friend can fill in the forms on your behalf if you’re too old or sick to travel to an office near you.

Who qualifies for the Sassa disability grant

In order to qualify for a SASSA Disability Grant, the applicant should/must;

Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.

Be resident in South Africa.

Be 18 to 59 years of age.

Submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.

Provide a medical assessment that is not older than 3 months at date of application.

Meet the requirements of the means test (including spouse).

Not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.

Not be in receipt of another social grant in respect of him or herself.

Documents Required For SASSA Disability Grant

Your 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID). If you don’t have an ID:

You must complete an affidavit on a standard SASSA format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who’s not a SASSA official.

You must bring a sworn statement signed by a reputable person who can verify your name and age.

The SASSA official will take your fingerprints.

You’ll be referred to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for the ID while your application is processed. If you don’t get an ID, your grant will be suspended.

A medical report and functional assessment report, by a medical practitioner recognised by SASSA, confirming your disability.

Proof of marital status (if applicable).

Proof of residence.

Proof of income or dividends (if any).

Proof of assets, including the municipal value of your property.

Proof of private pension (if any).

Your bank statements for the past three months.

Refugee status permit and 13-digit refugee ID.

Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) document (‘blue book’) or discharge certificate from your previous employer if you were employed.

A copy of the will and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts, if your spouse died within the last five years.

When you apply for a disability grant, the first thing we’ll do is arrange an appointment with you to take a full medical history. When your application is completed, you’ll be given a receipt as proof of your application (make sure you keep your receipt in a safe place).
