The SASSA old age grant is paid to people who are 60 years or older and it used to be called old-age pension. Only people who have a monthly income below a certain level can get this grant. The test to decide this is called a means test.

Qualifications for Sassa Old Age grant
You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
You must live in South Africa.
You may not receive any other social grant for yourself.
You may not be cared for in a state institution.
You may not earn more than R78 120 if you are single or R 156 240 if married.
You may not have assets worth more than R1 115 400 if you are single or R2 230 800 if you are married.
The Sassa old age grant can be paid through the following means;
cash at a specific paypoint on a particular day
electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
institutions (e.g. old-age homes)
SASSA recommends that you appoint a procurator at the SASSA office or give someone power of attorney, who can collect the grant on your behalf. This is something to consider, especially if you are unable to go to one of SASSA’s offices yourself.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO APPROVE A SASSA OLD AGE GRANT?
It may take up to three months to process your application.
If your grant is approved, you will be paid from the date on which you applied.
