Overview:

The oldest and largest public institution in Tanzania is the University of Dar es Salaam. It is located 13 kilometres from the city centre on the western edge of Dar es Salaam, covering 1,625 acres atop the viewing hill. Through Parliament Act No. 12 of 1970 and the enabling legal documents of the constituent institutions, it was created on July 1st, 1970.

  • It was established with three main objectives, namely:
  • To transmit knowledge as a basis of action, from one generation to another;
  • To act as a centre for advancing frontiers of knowledge through scientific research; and
  • To meet the high level human resource needs of the Tanzanian society.

The University's Faculty of Law was its first addition in 1961. With the formation of the several Faculties and Institutes, it grew over time. It founded several colleges, some of which ultimately developed into stand-alone, full-fledged universities.

A school of medicine was founded in 1963 on the grounds of the former Princess Margaret Hospital. The School joined the University College of Dar es Salaam, a constituent college of the University of East Africa, as a faculty of medicine in 1968. The Faculty changed its name to the University of Dar es Salaam Faculty of Medicine in 1970, when the university was founded. The Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, which is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam, was established from the Faculty of Medicine in July 1991. (MUCHS). The Muhimbili Institution of Health and Allied Sciences was established as a full-fledged university in 2007 thanks to the Universities Act number 7 of 2005, the umbrella act for universities (MUHAS).

In 1996, the former Ardhi Institute was converted into a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam under the name University College of Lands and Architectural Studies thanks to the University of Dar es Salaam Act number 12 of 1970, which provided the necessary framework (UCLAS). UCLAS was developed during a ten-year period, and its programmes and infrastructure were increased. The UCLAS was elevated to an independent institution in 2007 thanks to the Universities Act number 7 of 2005, which serves as an umbrella act for universities (ARU).
