The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is the majority shareholder of the Tanzania Commercial Bank, with minority stakes held by the Tanzania Posts Corporation, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, the Posta na Simu Savings and Credit Society, the Public Service Social Security Fund, and the Workers Compensation Fund. The Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (TP&TC) was established in order to serve the Tanzanian market. TPB was formed from the disbanded TP&TC. The Tanzania Postal Bank was established by Act No. 11 of 1991.

On Monday, June 29, 2015, the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania repealed the Act, and on Monday, March 29, 2016, TPB Bank PLC was established under the Companies Act (Cap 212). The bank introduced its new name, logo, and tagline to the public on Thursday, January 19, 2017. (Grow with us.) The bank changed its name to Tanzania Commercial Bank Plc on July 14, 2021, with the slogan "Growing stronger together." to provide convenient banking products and services through the deployment of innovative solutions, enhance value for stakeholders, and contribute to the country's socioeconomic needs.
